Our Commitment to #StopAsianHate
As a team of researchers from Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario, we are concerned of many of the recent acts of hate in our country and beyond. As a research team, we seek to shed light on the violence, marginalization and oppressions occurring in our communities, especially within family systems. The purpose of this statement is to acknowledge the detrimental consequences of anti-Asian racisms in our communities and to voice our strong and unequivocable support for our Asian communities across Canada and beyond and our joint efforts against anti-racism and violence. Anti-Asian hate crimes, in particular, have seen a sharp rise Canada during the past year, but the pandemic did not signal the start of anti-Asian hate crimes, violence, and racism. We need to recognize this as part of a long history of anti-Asian racism in Canada and continues until the present day. These acts of hatred serve to divide us, at a time when solidarity is most needed. We must stand together to fight against these nefarious issues and to ensure everyone feels safe in our universities and cities. It is not radical to believe that one should not fear for their safety because of their religion, skin colour, ethnicity, sexual identity, or ability. Beyond statements, it is important to take action and stand up for others when we see acts of hatred being committed. Our research is committed to understanding the experiences of racialized families. We stand with those fighting against prejudice and racism through research and in the rest of our society.
