Dr. Michael Saini, PhD, MSW, RSWDr. Michael Saini is co-applicant on this project. Dr. Saini holds the endowed Chair in Law and Social Work at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto. He was the PI on a 2011-2014 SSHRC grant for a series of studies exploring parents’ perceptions and experiences of high conflict after separation and divorce and to gain knowledge about the experiences of parents’ involvement of the family justice system. This qualitative research included interviews with parents about the potential buffers and limits of post-separation parenting and divorce to gain preliminary information about the range of experiences shared by parents about all aspects of being involved in high conflict situations, including their perceptions about the conflict, the reasons for conflict, the impact of conflict on the children, their perceptions of what worked to help them resolve conflict and their interactions with various service providers. He has been awarded several contracts from the Family, Children, and Youth Section on the Department of Justice Canada to understand the risk factors and indicators of high conflict, to explore the use of virtual technologies to support parent/child relationships post-separation, to explore parent strained relationships after separation and the effects of parental relocation. He has over 100 publications, including books, book chapters, government reports, systematic reviews, and peer-reviewed journal articles. He is actively involved in the Cochrane Collaboration (C1) and the Campbell Collaboration (C2) as an author of systematic reviews and a member of the C2 Process and Implementation Methods Group and the Information Retrieval Methods Groups. Dr. Saini facilitates community connections through the Domestic Violence Court and other community collaborations to facilitate participant recruitment.

Dr. Judith Hughes, PhD, MSWDr. Judy Hughes is an associate professor at the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Social Work. Her continuing program of research centers on exploring the meaning of violence in women’s lives with a particular focus on how professional service providers respond to violence in women’s lives and the accessibility of community resources and services for women who are leaving their abusive partners. These past projects have focussed on community and professional service providers, such as women’s advocates working in women’s shelters, community health nurses, and child welfare workers. Two projects have focused on how family law professionals, family law lawyers, mediators, and custody assessors respond to women who have experienced intimate partner violence. Findings from these past projects have been disseminated through journal articles, book chapters, academic conference presentations, and community reports and presentations. Some of these publications include Women’s Advocates and Shelter Residents: Describing Experiences of Working and Living in Domestic Violence Shelters, Women’s Recommendations for Child Welfare Workers, and Mothers' Narratives of Their Involvement With Child Welfare Services. As a co-investigator, Dr. Hughes leads recruitment and data collection within Manitoba.
